The plasma clearance and liver uptake of iron from transferrin of low and high iron saturation.

چکیده

I. Serum labelled with radioactive iron was adjusted to different degrees of iron saturation and clearance of the tracer from the circulation of rats and its uptake by liver and intestine were followed. 2. The results showed that: (a) plasma iron clearance did not vary according to whether labelled iron was attached to transferrin at high or low iron saturation; (b) uptake of labelled iron by the liver was greater from transferrin at high iron saturation than from transferrin at low saturation. 3. The results suggest the presence of a receptor mechanism in the liver similar to that previously shown in reticulocytes.

Residual erythropoiesis protects against myocardial hemosiderosis in transfusion-dependent thalassemia by lowering labile plasma iron via transient generation of apotransferrin

Cardiosiderosis is a leading cause of mortality in transfusion-dependent thalassemias. Plasma non-transferrin-bound iron and its redox-active component, labile plasma iron, are key sources of iron loading in cardiosiderosis. Risk factors were identified in 73 patients with or without cardiosiderosis. Soluble transferrin receptor-1 levels were significantly lower in patients with cardiosiderosis...

Basis of plasma iron exchange in the rabbit.

Rabbit transferrin in vitro is shown to load ferrous iron at random on its specific binding sites. The release of iron to reticulocytes is shown to be an all-or-none phenomenon. The two monoferric transferrins have similar in vivo plasma iron clearance rates and tissue distribution. Diferric transferrin, while giving a similar tissue distribution of radioiron, has a plasma iron clearance rate a...

Iron uptake from plasma transferrin by the duodenum is impaired in the Hfe knockout mouse.

Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is a disorder of iron metabolism in which enhanced iron absorption of dietary iron causes increased iron accumulation in the liver, heart, and pancreas. Most individuals with HH are homozygous for a C282Y mutation in the HFE gene. The function of HFE protein is unknown, but it is hypothesized that it acts in association with beta(2)-microglobulin and transferrin ...

Transferrin saturation, plasma iron turnover, and transferrin uptake in normal humans.

The relationship between plasma iron, transferrin saturation, and plasma iron turnover was studied in 53 normal subjects whose transferrin saturation varied between 17% and 57%, in 25 normal subjects whose transferrin saturation was increased by iron infusion to between 67% and 100%, and in five subjects with early untreated idiopathic hemochromatosis whose transferrin saturation was continuall...
